Study on Masculinity and Gender Norms in Liberia - Masculinity Study Liberia
During the two civil wars of Liberia (1989-2003), rape and other forms of sexual abuse were a widespread weapon of war. Liberia has now been peaceful for 15 years, but sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) remains rampant. There is limited analysis available on the root causes of the high prevalence of SGBV cases, rape especially. The Embassy of Sweden has therefore identified the need for a masculinity study which will study the interlinks between gender norms, masculinity, patriarchal norms and SGBV. A key objective with this study is to develop theories of change and development interventions that begin challenging negative notions of masculinity, which can be used by the Embassy and other development partners in Liberia.
