IR-EMOP for Ebola Affected Population in Liberia
In Liberia the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) had spread from Lofa and Monteserrado (which includes Monrovia) to other counties including Margibi, Bomi, Bong and Nimba by the end of May 2014. These counties were considered the epicentres of the virus.
As of 20 July, the cumulative number of suspected, probable and confirmed Ebola cases reported in Liberia stood at 238; and the total number of suspected, probable and confirmed Ebola deaths stood at 135. On 22 July the Government of Liberia declared a state of emergency for the Ebola crisis, closing access to schools and markets. On the same day, the Liberian Government officially requested the United Nations support for the Country's Emergency Response Plan. In response to the EVD crisis, WFP launched this Immediate Emergency Response Operation (IR EMOP), to provide food assistance to EVD affected populations. The objectives of WFP's food assistance were to:
i) Save lives of EVD-affected populations, particularly the most vulnerable groups and ensure that their basic food needs were met while the health-care providers addressed the medical needs of the sick (Strategic Objective 1); and
ii) Support the affected population to bridge the lean season which is characterized by scarce food commodities and high prices. (Strategic Objective 3)
