Small Towns Water and Sanitation Project

The project forms part of government of Uganda’s water and sanitation programme for 60 small towns and it’s the outcome of Bank financed strategic development plans, feasibility studies and final designs. It entails construction of water supply facilities in the seven project towns, located in the eastern, central and north-western parts of Uganda. The project will also contribute to improved sanitation in the project areas, through promotion of the use of improved latrines at household level, provision of public improved latrines in each of the towns, and improvement of both solid waste management and storm water drainage. It has four major components ranging from physical infrastructure for water and sanitation facilities to changing of hygiene behaviors and helping to reduce water borne diseases, and reducing the ratio of students per sanitation stances. The project cost is estimated at UA 20.92 million.

The objective of the project is to improve the standard of living and promote development in the towns of Apac, Iganga, Kigumba, Mityana, Mpigi, Nebbi, and Pakwach, by providing them with improved quality and delivery of water supply and sanitation services. When completed, the project will provide sustainable water supply and improved sanitation for a population of 322,400, and reduce the current high incidence of water borne diseases (492 cases per 1000) by 25% within the first year of commissioning.

The primary beneficiaries is the population residing in the selected 7 districts in Uganda through the development of water authorities and private operators. The project will provide access to clean water and improved sanitation for a total of 322,400 residents of the seven towns, thereby improving their well being and facilitating the general socio-economic development of the centres.
