Improve Teacher Training in National Teachers' College (NTC) of Kaliro
The National Teachers’ College Kaliro (NTC Kaliro) is one of the five secondary school teacher training colleges in Uganda funded by the Government through the Ministry of Education and Sports. The college operated as a Primary Teachers College until August 1985, when it was upgraded to its present status of National Teachers College awarding the Diplomas in Education of Kyambogo University.
The college occupies an area of approximately 85 hectares (198 acres) on lease hold tenure from Kaliro District. The land title is available. The entire college plant was built by the Government of Uganda under the first International Development Association/Word Bank project in the 1960s as a model regional Primary Teachers College. However, the construction works needed to upgrade the college to a secondary teacher training college were disrupted in 1971 when the contractors where expelled from the country by the Idi Amin regime.
As indicated in its mission statement, NTC Kaliro aims to “offer competitive teacher education responsive to local, national and international needs.”
The college runs two training programs: a two-year full time program for a diploma in education for secondary (DES) and a three-year part-time (summer) program for a diploma in education for primary (DEP). The teaching is conducted under four departments: Arts, Science, Vocational and Professional studies, and embraces some eighteen subjects.
Currently, the college counts with about 40 staff and 1000 students.
