Food Aid in Uganda - World Food Programme 2008

Since the late 1990’s, the conflict in northern Uganda, coupled with recurrent natural disasters and instability in neighbouring countries, has taken an economic and human toll on civilians. While the security situation in the country has improved over 2007, over 900,000 persons remain displaced and another estimated 900,000 are suffering the effects of recent droughts or floods; including food insecurity. CIDA’s contribution is used to help the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide relief to food-insecure people, particularly in the north and the insecure northeast region of Karamoja; to support the transition of food insecure persons in the north and northeast to self-sufficiency, and; to help develop the Government's capacity to address the needs of food insecurity, by assisting the Government in monitoring and supporting community services and infrastructure. The operation seeks to meet the food aid needs of an estimated 1.18 million beneficiaries.
