Emergency response in the Democratic Republic of Congo - UNHCR 2012
October 2012 - Humanitarian conditions in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo have deteriorated considerably since April 2012 due to increased activity by armed groups. The situation has remained particularly volatile in the east, as insecurity and fighting continue to generate internal displacement, as well as displacement to neighbouring countries. With Canada's support, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees provides emergency assistance to address the needs of 475,000 newly internally displaced persons and refugees in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda, by providing emergency shelter and basic household items, camp management and coordination, and prevention and protection against sexual and gender-based violence.
