SWE-2011-70 Gender perspectives on business conflicts in East Africa: Women entrepreneurs in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.

The planned research project Gender perspectives on business conflicts in East Africa, Women entrepreneurs in Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya will aim to explore the following questions: How do women entrepreneurs handle the lack of access to commercial justice? Under what circumstances are they willing to engage in entrepreneurship despite the risks? Which formal and informal mechanisms of arbitration or conflict resolution are perceived as available to women? The research will be carried out in close collaboration with researchers and NGOSs in the countries involved, and will build on qualitative methods such informal dialogues and participant observation. The new knowledge about gendered business processes generated will have implications on development policy, gender mainstreaming and theoretical development.
