SWE-2010-159 Prevention of unsafe abortion through increasing access to medical abortion and effective contraception

The project aims at preventing unsafe abortion through access to medical abortion and contraception. An intervention to provide > 5000 women from >100 countries lacking safe abortion services with medical abortion via telemedicine will be analysed. In an attempt to prevent horizontal transmission of HIV, condoms currently represent the only effective contraceptive method available. However, given the large number of HIV-infected children born annually, additional contraceptive methods for HIV-infected women are needed especially in countries were access to safe abortion is lacking. The levonorgestrel releasing intrauterine system will be investigated in a randomised controlled trial with regard to safety (viral load, CD4 cell levels, concentration of HIV viral copies in the cervical mucus), acceptability and prevalence of genital infection among HIV positive women in Uganda.
