Global Business Labs - Uganda Phase 2

Global Business Labs (GBL) Uganda started in 2013 to support Start-up SMEs through acceleration and growth phases. The first GBL- U lab was based in Makerere University with its activities reaching over 30,000 students over the project period. To date, GBL Uganda has enabled 25 companies to thrive and create more than 300 jobs for youths of these, 40% are male and 60% women. In this second phase GBL is “building competitive gender-focused and youth owned sustainable businesses in Uganda” through scaling up its activities and improving its offering to its clients – the youth entrepreneurs. GBL will open 4 additional labs with a regional focus. Of these, three will be based in regional Universities in Central, Northern and Western Uganda. The 4th new lab is a growth lab has also been added to enable high potential SMEs that complete incubation and acceleration phases to access extra support and connect to local and international markets. GBL aims at generating an additional 1,700 jobs and support at least 144 companies over the 3.5 years of implementation. GBL also aims at supporting the companies with financial support in form of crowd-funding, angel investment rounds and loans. This project is intended to achieve a greater level of gender equality by supporting Women led/owned enterprises, creating jobs for both women and men and enabling access to finance for both women and men- led companies. In all these interventions, GBL aims at reaching at least 50% women with technical, business and financial support. This pathway also is intended to ensure long-term financial sustainability of GBL Uganda’s activities through interest earnings on loans, fees on the funding platform and commissions on successful angel investment rounds.
