Literacy Achievement and Retention Activity (LARA)
(Uganda): .The Literacy Achievement and Retention Activity (LARA) will continue to support the Government of Uganda's national early grade reading (EGR) program by transforming reading instruction and reducing gender-based violence in order to increase retention and improve learning outcomes in primary schools. LARA's interventions will reach an estimated 1.4 million pupils in 3,200 schools. LARA prints and distributes textbooks and teacher guides in English and three local languages; delivers targeted teacher training; provides post-training support, supervision, and monitoring; and conducts EGR assessments. LARA increases retention by identifying and training local change agents who in turn provide training and support to teachers, community members, and pupils to prevent bullying, corporal punishment and sexual abuse. In addition, referral networks are established and local child protection services strengthened to both respond to and prevent violence against children..
