Agricultural Biotechnology Support Program II - (ABSPII) New
(Uganda): This vital applied-research activity is aimed at promoting the judicious use of modern biotechnology to strengthen the scientific capacity of the Uganda National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO), and to develop East African Highland Banana varieties resistant to major diseases and pests. FY 2014 funds will be used to foster progress along the transgenic crop development cycle. Specific activities include: (1) transgenic transformation of host plants; (2) greenhouse testing of transformed plants (12 lines across the different diseases and pests) and confined field testing; (3) dissemination of non-transgenic varieties that have been proven to have significant resistance to these stresses (at least 500 test plots with four hybrid varieties); and (4) training on banana transformation, molecular analysis, and execution of field tests.
