Conservation International has applied to the Embassy of Sweden in Monrovia for funding of 3,318,525 SEK to carry out the "Blue Ocean Conference" in Liberia during the period March 18-22, 2019.
The intervention aims at improving the management and use of oceans in Liberia by raising awareness of stakeholders such as fishermen, consumers and decision-makers on the issues impacting seas and oceans and to work across disciplines, both with national and international actors, to discuss possible actions that can be taken to improve management and sustainable development of marine resources.
Conservation International will implement the conference together with the Liberian Government’s agencies such as the Liberian Maritime Authority (LiMA), the Liberian Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority of Liberia (NaFAA). Niras and the Embassy of Sweden i Monrovia will be part of the planning of the conference.
The Objective of the conference is to change the hearts and minds of decision makers and stakeholders invested in the ocean to push new and innovative policies to protect Liberia’s coastal and marine resources. The following are the expected outcomes of the intervention: - A call for action to support implementation of the SDG 14 is agreed and adopted by participants; - A registry of voluntary commitments created, with concrete steps outlined on how to achieve SDG 14 and the 2050 AIMS; - Strengthened cooperation and partnership between and amongst stakeholders regarding knowledge and experience sharing on ocean issues; - Increased awareness of stakeholders on the importance of ocean conservation and enhancing ecosystems. On the overall, it is expected that at the end of the conference, relevant government stakeholders in the marine domain will see sufficient justifications to begin to take concrete measures that seek to address current and emerging issues pertinent to the sustainability of seas and oceans in Liberia and Africa at large. Key national level institutions targeted with this intervention are Environmental Protection Agency, Liberia Maritime Authority, National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority, National Port Authority, Ministry of National Defense, etc.
