Air Passenger Service in West Africa Coastal Countries: Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone

The objective of the special operation was to enable the humanitarian community to access the affected populations in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. This was achieved through: i) the provision of safe, reliable and cost-effective inter-agency air transport passenger service to United Nations agencies, NGOs, diplomatic missions and donor organizations providing humanitarian assistance in the region; ii) the transport of light cargo such as medical supplies, high-energy foods and emergency telecommunications equipment; and iii) the provision of timely evacuations (medical and security) for the humanitarian community in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. The special operation was launched for the provision of air services to the humanitarian community between Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone in 2010. For the first six months in 2010 the project remained a key pillar of the humanitarian community's strategy in the region, allowing fast movement of relief actors within the most important operational bases in the three countries at a crucial stage of resettlement, repatriation and reintegration programmes in the West Africa Coastal region (WAC).
