SWaSSA: Regional Water and Sanitation- AWF and WSP

Funding under this initiative provides support for two regional water and sanitation programs: the African Water Facility (AWF) and the World Bank Water and Sanitation Program in Africa (WSP). The AWF is a multi-donor trust fund established at the request of the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW) in May 2004, and hosted by the African Development Bank. Current activities of the AWF cover four broad categories: strengthening water governance; investments to meet water needs; strengthening the financial base; and improving water knowledge and dissemination. The WSP aims to assist African Government's develop their capacity to implement large-scale water supply and sanitation programs. Key objectives of this initiative are to: assist focus countries develop and implement large scale town Water Supply and Sanitation (WSS) programs, and initiate improved approaches; and deepen the knowledge and experience of WSS management through an innovative and regional advocacy and learning program. The total value of this multi-country initiative is $18.2 million over 3 years, starting 2009-10.
