SWE-2012-124: Agriculture, Health and Scientific Homecomings: A study of internationally-trained scientists that return to Zimbabwe, Uganda and Ghana

Science is widely seen as one of the key ingredients for finding new solutions to perennial development challenges in Africa. Many hopes and investments rest upon the young African scientists that undergo scientific training abroad and subsequently return to their home countries. However, detailed case studies of their experiences are surprisingly few. This study examines the situation of scientists that return to three African countries. It focuses on two fields of science that are particularly relevant to sustainable development and improved qualities of life: agricultural science and the science of infectious diseases. Theories from science and technology studies as well as economic anthropology are combined with qualitative and quantitative methods to carry out a comparative and multisited study.
