SWE-2010-197 On-site treatment of greywater - upgrading to a resource for irrigation, service or recharge

This project aims to develop, and apply at pilot scale in Uganda, Ghana and Jordan, robust and low-cost alternatives for treating and upgrading greywater on-site to produce a safe resource of water for irrigation and service. In a preliminary study, the removal of particles, organic matter (BOD) and disease causing organisms by the bark and char coal has been high, much higher than for a conventional sand filter. The removal or organic matter, surfactants, suspended substances and disease causing organisms will be studied under varying organic and hydraulic loads, corresponding to different access to water, and design criteria, including hygiene aspects, will be developed and used when building the pilots.
