Målet med JIP var att stödja regeringen i södra Sudan i dess roll som fredsmäklare mellan regeringen i Uganda och Herrens motståndsarmé (Lords's Resistance Army) i norra Uganda. Stödet var finansiellt, logistiskt och administrativt.
The overall objctive of the JIP was to provide a grant to the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) for basic finance, logistics and administrative support to the peace talks between the Govenment of Uganda and the Lord's Resistance Army, mediated by the GoSS.
